A regeneration project in Glasgow featuring curtain walling from Technal, has won a UK Aluminium in Renovation Award.
This latest accolade for Elder and Cannon Architects’ acclaimed Castlemilk Stables follows a string of other award commendations, and it is the second time a Technal scheme has won an Aluminium in Renovation Award.
The UK Aluminium in Renovation Awards, organised by the Council for Aluminium in Building, recognise projects which have achieved excellence in the use of aluminium for renovation and restoration. The independent judging panel, chaired by Professor Michael Stacey, assessed the entries for a range of criteria, including energy efficiency, contemporary design, socio-economic impact and significant use of aluminium.
Commenting on the project, the judges said, “What was delightful about this project was that it took a more or less ruined historic building and brought new life to it. We commend the quality of space that has been created, especially in the courtyard, and the contrast between the glass and aluminium contemporary elements, and the masonry construction of the stables. This is a mouth-watering adaptation of a handsome but derelict stable block. The new structures contrast and complement the old, creating dynamic volumes between.'
The Castlemilk Stables involved the restoration of an eighteenth century listed stable block, which had been severely damaged by fire, and the addition of a striking new courtyard extension. This has transformed the building into a vibrant focus for the local community and a catalyst for regeneration in the area.
Technal’s Trame Horizontale curtain walling was used for the upper gallery facing the recessed courtyard and contrasts successfully with the natural stone façades of the original stable building that have been preserved.
The glazing system incorporates flush face gaskets to minimise the vertical profiles, creating a frameless appearance. Concealed top hung vents were inserted into the curtain walling to provide natural ventilation.
The curtain walling reduces the glazing sight lines, and met the project’s performance requirements and budget constraints. The contemporary glazing encloses an efficient, modern office space on the first floor gallery, helping to bring this historic building back to life.
Technal’s MX Trame curtain walling gives specifiers the flexibility to accentuate the vertical or horizontal profiles with projecting caps, and uses specially designed flush gaskets to reduce the sight lines of the corresponding sections for a distinctive effect across the façade.
The system can accommodate 6mm to 32mm glazing as a flat façade and the MX Trame Horizontale option can be faceted up to 10 and supplied with a 32mm to 42mm infill for applications where additional acoustic performance is required.
The Castlemilk Stables provide office accommodation for local housing associations, managed workspace for small businesses, a conference facility and community crèche. The scheme has also been designed to minimise impact on the environment, with sustainable features such as a ground source heat pump to distribute the under floor heating – reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.
